Employee Matching Gifts
Do you know how to support OBHC with a matching gift from your employer?
Corporate Matching Gift Programs
Corporate matching gift programs are charitable giving programs set up by corporations in which the company matches donations made by employees (and sometimes retirees) to eligible non-profit organizations. Although many companies give predominantly to education, statistics show that two-thirds of companies will match employee directed funds to non-profits of the employee’s choice; the other one-third of companies may restrict donations to specific types of organizations by issuing a list of categories of who they will or will not support.
Other important information on employee matching gifts comes from the CASE (The Council for Advancement and Support of Education who reports 33% of employee matching givers will match contributions from retirees, 14% will match contributions from spouses of eligible employees, 12% match employees gifts at a ratio of 2/1 or even 3/1, most matching gifts are now unrestricted, and some companies also match gifts of securities (51%) and volunteers time (6%). The industries having the most matching gift programs were manufacturing, finance, insurance, services, and public utilities.
Company Employees Initiate Matching Gifts
The usual steps include:
- The employee gets a matching gift form from his/her employer (often the human resources department) and fills it out in full.
- The employee sends the form to the nonprofit organization along with his/her contribution.
- The nonprofit receiving the gift completes the form and mails it back to their employer.
- The company sends the nonprofit the matching gift.
Each company publishes a list of eligible employees, how much they will match and what the matching fit process looks like. Depending on the company, employees may have the option of applying online through electronic submission or making use a paper matching gift form.
All of this information should be located on the employer’s website, explained in an employee’s benefit packets, or explained to the employee through a phone call to the Human Resources Department. If your company does not have a matching gift program your phone calls can help motivate your managers to set one up.
